For
psychologists and others interested in LGBT issues, we provide information
about professional and lay literature and community resources. We also offer
psychologists access to knowledgeable clinicians when problems or questions
arise in practice. Our resources include:
-
An LGBT
listserv open to any OPA member, on request, for news and information
about committee activities. If you’d like to join the listserv,
please contact, Denise Brenner at the OPA Office via
e-mail or phone
(800-783-1983/614-224-0034).
-
LGBT/Ethics MCE programs through OPA Annual Conventions,
Workshops, Pride Conferences, and Home Study.
-
Information and alerts about relevant state and national
news.
-
Listing of community resources and relevant literature and
web sites (below).
-
LGBT
advocacy in cooperation with community groups and through legislative
testimony. (See
Dr. Jensen and
Dr. Fradkin's 12/3/03 DOMA Testimony)
LGBT Subcommittee Meetings
Committee meetings are held by teleconference on a quarterly basis prior to
OPA Board Meetings. They start at 8:00 AM and last about 50 minutes. All
members of the listserv are welcome to participate in these phone
conferences.
Dates for this year are: November 7th, 2007 and February
6th, April 12th and June 4th, 2008. Listserv members receive meeting
reminders and minutes via e-mail.
If you would like to become a formal member of the
committee and participate on a regular basis, please contact the Chair,
Lynne
Rustad, PhD.
LGBT Subcommittee Meeting Minutes
Progress this Past Year
- The LGBT Task Force became a standing Subcommittee of
the OPA Diversity Committee. Names of committee members were listed on our
web page as available resources.
- The LGBT page of the OPA website was updated and new
material added.
- The Chair served on the Diversity and Education
Committees to foster collaboration with and support activities of these
groups.
- A DVD from a series on assessment and psychotherapy of
gay and lesbian clients was reviewed for inclusion in OPA Library.
- Preparation of an electronic needs survey for LGBT
listserv members was initiated.
- Plans were made for an LGBT table at the 2007 OPA
Convention to inform attendees about the committee and available
resources.
Goals for this year include
- Assessing educational interests and needs of LGBT
listserv members and evaluating the effectiveness and utility of the
listserv. An electronic survey will be distributed to all listserv members
this Fall.
- An LGBT Spring 2008 Stand-alone Workshop. Potential
presenters and topics (e.g., aging, reparative therapy, orientation
confusion/discomfort, multiple minority status) have been discussed. Final
selection will be influenced by the results of the listserv survey.
- An additional Home Study course will be prepared if the
survey indicates sufficient interest.
- Presentations to regional psychological associations in
cooperation with the Diversity Committee. The first will be presented to
Cleveland Psychological Association on November 12, 2007.
- Increasing community outreach by volunteering to
present LGBT-relevant psychological information to local groups such as
the Stonewall Columbus series for healthcare providers, Reaching Out:
Providing Care for the LGBT Population.
