Back to About OPA

Note: The Ohio Child, Youth and Family Group is still in the process for meeting the membership qualifications of an OPA Special Interest Group.  We are currently looking to recruit additional child, youth and family psychologists/psychology students (members and non-members of OPA) to join our group.  Although we are based in Columbus, we welcome psychologists/psychology students from all over Ohio.  We plan to make our meeting agendas and minutes accessible to members who cannot make our bimonthly meetings in Columbus and aim to set up an annual meeting/dinner to coincide with the OPA Fall Convention.  Please feel free to e-mail Shannon H. Johnson, PsyD with any questions about the group or how to join - there is no fee for joining.

Mission Statement for the Ohio Child, Youth and Family Group

The Ohio Child, Youth and Family Group (OCYFG) is composed of scientific-practitioner mental health professionals in Ohio whose major professional interests lie with children, youth and families. Our primary goals are to:

  1. disseminate applicable mental health resources to professionals and consumers in Ohio,
  2. coordinate with relevant national and statewide psychological associations, and
  3. stay abreast of and advocate for specific child, youth and family issues in Ohio and nationally.

Methods to Achieve Primary Goals

  • Obtain OPA Special Interest Group status by increasing our membership to 20 psychologists, 10 of which will be OPA members.
  • Utilize the OPA listserv to initially ascertain the resources and educational needs of child, youth and family psychologists/psychology students in Ohio. Continue to employ the OPA listserv to enhance a user-friendly means for these psychologists/psychology students to communicate with each other and with the OCYFG.
  • Develop a child, youth and family website via the OPA website. This website will include descriptions of and contact information for national and statewide mental health resources (including Internet links).
  • Determine the demand for and practicality of developing a user-friendly and effective referral network specific to child, youth and family psychologists in Ohio.
  • Advance continued education for professionals and consumers of mental health care via the promotion of OPA sponsored workshops and parent conferences on child, youth and family issues.
  • Represent the interests of OCYFG at OPA meetings and develop a visible presence at OPA conferences.
