While factual knowledge, how-to skills and IQ continue to be important as requirements for job success, emotional intelligence skills have become even more crucial and valuable. Relationships with clients, their families and additional helping professionals rely on the ability to use emotional intelligence skills. The added benefits of personal satisfaction, combined with a successful career, make emotional intelligence a key competency for any clinician. Thank you for your interest in this module.

The American Psychological Association’s (APA) ethic guidelines (APA, 2002) dictate that as psychologist we practice within our areas of competence. However many psychologists are asking, “What does it mean to be competent in providing treatment to racially/ethnically diverse populations?” This course provides the answers to that question by introducing important guidelines for practice developed by APA, and the Council of National Psychological Associations for the Advancement of Ethnic Minority Interest. It is our hope that it will promote your knowledge of appropriate psychological treatment for racially, ethnically and culturally diverse populations and will motivate you to learn more in the future. Thank you for your interest in this module on culturally sensitive mental health practice for ethnic minority populations. This module was prepared by the members of the OPA Diversity Committee.
