Foundation for Psychology announces 2008 Michael
Sullivan Scholarship Winner
March 27, 2008
The Foundation for Psychology in Ohio is pleased to
announce that Janelle Hines, a clinical doctoral student at the University
of Cincinnati, has been selected as the first recipient of the Dr. Michael
Sullivan Diversity Scholarship Fund.
“Dr. Michael Sullivan’s passion and commitment for
diversity and multiculturalism in the community, is embodied in Janelle’s
sickle cell disease project,” said Michael Ranney, executive director, Ohio
Psychological Association’s Foundation for Psychology in Ohio. “We look
forward to seeing the results of her community outreach project.”
This national scholarship supports research, training and
community projects in the areas of diversity and multiculturalism. Hines’
submission was chosen from 29 applications received from students, faculty,
state associations and community organizations around the U.S., its
territories and Canada.
Hines’ project seeks to advance education and awareness
among people who work with sickle cell disease, while empowering youth who
have the disease. She will recruit 40 African American adolescents, ages
12-18, with sickle cell disease to develop and design a brochure about it.
The brochure will be distributed to schools and community programs to raise
awareness and educate the public. The content and design of the brochure
also will be the foundation of a large display that will be used at
community meetings and health fairs.
The Dr. Michael Sullivan Diversity Scholarship Fund is
named in honor of Dr. Michael Sullivan, who served as the assistant
executive director for state advocacy in the American Psychological
Association (APA). This scholarship recognizes his ongoing commitment and
passion related to issues of multiculturalism and inclusion. The fund is
administered by the Foundation for Psychology in Ohio, the non-profit arm of
the Ohio Psychological Association (OPA), a membership association for 1,600
Ohio psychologists. For more information on the Fund, or OPA, visit
