Past Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award Winner Shares Her Story

By: Marianne Bowden, PhD

I want to share with all of you my experience working with an organization that won the OPA award as a psychologically healthy workplace. My hope is that you will think of organizations you know and urge them to apply.

I work for Certified Angus Beef, providing EAP and Wellness services for their staff. I urged them to apply for the award because I knew having a psychologist as part of their team made them unique. Indeed, they applied and won the Award in 2012, and the national award from APA that year as well. They flew me to Washington, D.C. for the awards ceremony in which I was recognized for their Best Practices Award.

Employee Benefit NewsIt is a wonderful experience to have a company apply and be recognized. Most companies HR (Human Resources) departments are familiar with awards given by the American Heart Association, and many HR and insurance companies. I have found that HR people frequently fill out these applications for recognition and thus, one more application for a Psychologically Healthy workplace is not really any more work for them.

I have also come to realize that when companies apply for this award it makes them and all their employees feel good about what they do. It is a win-win situation, even for those companies that don’t receive the award.

So, even if you don’t work directly for a company, if you know of companies that you think would enjoy this recognition, please ask them to apply. It helps our profession and theirs! For more information, visit this link.
