Individuals who come from minority populations in the United States and who are also Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgendered face many challenges. They face misunderstanding and discrimination not only from the larger community, but also from communities that they identify themselves as a being a part of. For example, African Americans, Native Americans, and Americans of Asian background often face distrust, discrimination and misunderstanding from the larger culture that surrounds them. But, as people who also identify as LGBT, misunderstanding and discrimination comes from their own minority communities in ways that are as unique as the communities themselves. This workshop will explore the many complicated facets of being a sexual minority within another minority population that includes ethnic minority groups, people with disabilities and people who often have what they may experience as conflicting religious or spiritual identities.
