The new Diagnostic and Statistical manual of Mental Disorders (DSM 5) was released last May. The last major revision to the DSM was in 1994 and there are a number of significant changes. This seminar provides practitioners with an overview of substantive changes to the new DSM, including a brief discussion of issues related to prevalence and reliability of DSM 5 diagnoses. This overview will incorporate an examination of changes in the structural organizaton of DSM, as well as disorder-specific changes and related rationale for major diagnostic groupings. The proposed new Cultural Formulation Interview designed to help clinicians assess cultural aspects of diagnosis will be introduced.
