William A. Eddy, LISW, JD, CFLS, is a lawyer, therapist, mediator and the President of High Conflict Institute in San Diego, CA. He developed the \”high conflict personality\” theory and has become an international expert on managing disputes involving high conflict personalities and personality disorders.
Mental health and legal professionals are increasingly dealing with high-conflict families. Although found in families dealing with a number of various issues, high conflict families are frequently present in divorce and abuse cases. This program will address five \”high-conflict\” personality disorders, recent brain research about managing their emotions, and ways to work with them more effectively. The effects of these disorders on their children will be addressed, as well as methods of teaching parents simple conflict resolution skills, which they can then teach to their children. This program will draw on the presenter\’s New Ways for Families method of teaching skills to high conflict families, and will include brief practice exercises, since skills for working effectively with these families can be counter-intuitive.
Objectives: Identify the criteria of 5 \”high conflict\” personality disorders; recognize insecure attachments as risk factors for personality disorders; apply recent brain research to changing high-conflict behavior; apply skills to focus client son learning skills rather than blaming others; apply cognitive-behavior therapy methods with clients using a workbook; provide structure for high conflict parents in communicating with their children.
